"Thursday was very successful and I think ran extremely well. The mild weather also meant we could really enjoy being out. My partner Tim shoots a bit in Suffolk - Glemham Hall I think, but he said to me on Thursday "it's not as good as this". "Philip...I must congratulate you on the quality of the team you have assembled. It is obvious that great thought and a huge influx of capital went into your operation. Once we agreed upon the value of a big finish each day, it became the perfect shoot. Believe me, I know we shot well over the bag, but please think of it as an investment, as I firmly believe that is why I am able to re-book. There was grumbling Monday and Tuesday from the group, and it was doubtful if I could have sold the shoot again if we continued with blank or light drives at the end of the day. It has been my experience that the guns remember the last drive, more than any other. If we don't have a big finish they don't think back to the great first drive, only the one that is fresh in their mind. The first drive of Friday, when I shot the Grey Partridge, was perhaps the finest drive I have ever experienced. How Robert can get the birds to fly so beautifully over flat ground is a wonder to me. Everyone was thrilled, even though two guns ran out of cartridges. As wonderful as it was, the most talk on the way back was about the last drive, with the ducks and mixed bag. Again, what is fresh in the mind is most remembered. As for me, I will never forget that first drive.
