Shooting Permits
We can help overseas visitors through the process of obtaining an Overseas Visitors’ Permit to shoot in Great Britain if one is required. Guests wishing to bring their own shotgun or rifle to Great Britain will always need an Overseas Visitors’ Permit. There are two types of Overseas Visitors’ permits:
• Visitors’ Firearm Permit which allows the holder possession of any firearm, and to purchase, acquire or have in their possession any ammunition, to which section 1 of the 1968 Firearms Act applies; or • Visitors’ Shotgun Permit which allows the holder possession and to purchase or acquire shotguns. It is possible to obtain individual Permits or, where a group are travelling together and shooting at the same time, a Group Permit can be obtained which is more cost effective. If you, or anyone in your party is bringing a shotgun or fifle with them, MG&S can make the necessary application for you. To do this we will require the following information regarding all persons wanting to be granted a permit: • Full name • Home address • Nationality • Date of Birth • Address during your shooting trip • Details of any convictions (for all types of offences) in any country • Expected arrival and departure dates for the shooting trip • Full details of the Firearms/Shotguns e.g.: • Calibre/Bore/Gauge;Applications for Overseas Visitors’ Permits must be made as early as possible and a minimum of 6 weeks is recommended. MG&S will act as your sponsor to obtain the Permit and will take all reasonable steps to ensure that one is granted but the ultimate decision as to whether a Permit is granted and how quickly is with the local Police Force. Sufficient time must also be allowed for MG&S to send the Permit to you so you can present it to Customs on arrival in Great Britain along with the firearm/shotgun listed in the Permit. If the Permit is not presented on arrival into Great Britain and you have your gun with you, it may be seized. Should you bring any guns not listed on the permit, these may also be seized. When you receive your Overseas Visitors’ Permit, you should sign it immediately. It should be kept with you at all times when out shooting and transporting your firearm/shotgun. If any of your guns or ammunition are lost or stolen, please contact us immediately. As sponsors of your Permit application we will be able to deal with this on your behalf. MG&S can provide secure storage for your shotgun/firearms if required. If bringing your own shotgun or rifle with you, overseas visitors must check the requirements of their airline or carrier. These vary according to carrier and from time to time so you should ensure you get the most current information. Some airlines, such as American Airlines, will not carry guns whereas others do butrequire them to be stored in airline approved carry cases and some charge an additional fee and/or require prior notice that you will be beinging a gun with you. You will also need to ensure that you have all necessary documentation with you. Some airlines require proof of ownership and guests travelling from the US will need to produce their Overseas Visitors' Permit for the gun in question prior to departure from the US otherwise the gun will not be allowed on board. Guests not bringing a shotgun or rifle with them from outside of the UK may still require an Overseas Visitors Permit. Whether one is needed will depending on a number of factors and MG&S will be able to confirm the position in each case once all the circumstances are known. If a Permit is required, MG&S will be happy to make an application on your behalf once you have provided all of the information listed above. In all cases, visitors should ensure that they hold adequate third party liability insurance for shooting in Great Britain. MG&S require a minimum level of £5,000,000. If applicable, visitors should also ensure that they have insurance for the transportation and use of their guns overseas Tipping
The tipping of the Head Keeper after a day's shooting is a long established tradition in England, and Guns are expected to provide a gratuity after each day's shooting. MG&S can assist in advising regarding the correct protocol.
