SPECIAL DAYS NEWSLETTER
What A Fantastic Novice Day We Had
We started off with a demonstration on how to safely remove the gun from the slip and how to hold a gun on the drive, etc. William Heal, ex Regional Director of BASC, was on hand to give the demonstration and generally emphasise all aspects of safety before the novices went off. Each novice had an experienced supervisor with them all day to explain what they could or could not shoot, make sure there was no low shooting, etc.

Then it was off to the first drive......Lots of birds came over the Guns and they all had some good shooting. Roger Goldsmith had never ever been on a shoot before. With William's help can you believe he got a good pheasant with his very first shot!! What fun. In fact all the novices got one or more birds on the very first drive. Lynn Tricker managed two birds on her first drive.........on the recent Ladies' Day she had to wait until her fourth drive to hit her first bird!
Lynn was really starting to do well
John got several birds......on his first drive!
On the second drive all the Guns again got some good shooting. Roger shot his first ever fast Norfolk Partridge. John Engledow had shot before but it was a long time ago. What he said to me was "I wanted to take up shooting again, but really didn't feel confident to join a full blown driven day. Today has been a great experience for me and I feel much more happier now to join a full shoot." (In fact at the end of the day John asked me to send him some dates where we have some singe pegs still available) . John had a couple of great birds on the second drive as did Andrew Bickle.
Andrew was really getting the hang of this shooting!
Another high pheasant!
By the fourth drive things were really going well. Val Rees had a couple of really high pheasants. These birds just amazed everyone. It was flat terrain, no wind, the sun was coming out and yet they flew spectacularly high. For Val, Andrew and Lynn to hit several of these birds with their novice status was fantastic to watch! By the time it was lunch Lynn had got twice as many birds in the bag than she had on Ladies' Day. John had shot over 20 birds and I think Andrew probably had more than that. Roger was still improving all the time and Val said to me "I'm definitely getting the hang of this now" I would say that was an understatement bearing in mind the two high birds I'd just seen her shoot!
You are shooting behind
This is the angle that you can shoot!
At the end of the day we all sat down to a lovely traditional two course lunch. The pork was great, but the cheesecake was to die for.
They certainly had plenty of shooting
Table set for a lovely light lunch
It really was a great day all round. There was a great atmosphere and I think the proof in the pudding is that nearly all the guns asked me to send them details of future days available. The final count, 520 shots for 149 birds. Not bad for novices, under 3.5 shots per bird shot. What a great day!!
Loads of birds!
The sausages went down well
I think the following testimonial says it all:
"My son attended your "novice day" yesterday and I felt that it is only appropriate to offer our thanks for a terrific day. We were both made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Philip, you are the perfect host, and William compliments you as the perfect gentleman. A super day was had by all and the quality of the drives is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the keeper/beating team. It was so nice to see the pickers up doing their job properly too, only clearing up behind the guns once they had picked as many pricked birds as possible. All in all a splendid day and great value for money. Many thanks to the whole team for making the day so enjoyable. Keep up the very high standards as they make your shooting experience so memorable!"
Should I have this second sausage?
Roger gets a great pheasant.....with his first ever shot!!

Parent & Child Day Number Two!

We now have three couples who want to go ahead so we have picked Friday 23rd December as the day. It could even be given as a super Christmas present!! Regular readers of our newsletter will know that we have already had one Parent & Child Day, which was an incredible success.

We shoot with five parents and five children. We provide stuffers/instructors for all the children, so the parents can have a good day too, knowing that their son or daughter is being well looked after.

It is a fully catered day and all for only £800 per parent and child combined. So, if you want to experience one of these unique days, please get in touch soon. If you have any queries just email me or call me anytime on 07802 546175.

Hammer Gun Day Number Two!
As with the Parent & Child Day, we have had so many enquiries for another Hammer gun day that we have now allocated Saturday 31st December as Hammer Gun Day number two. It will be a fully catered day for nine guns at a fixed price of £475 including VAT. If you don't have your own Hammer gun we can arrange for you to borrow free of charge a fine English Hammer gun for the day.

So, if you are interested in taking one or more pegs on Hammer Gun Day number two, call Philip Milburn on 07802 546175 anytime or email.

Walked Up Days...Very Few Left Now
Walked up days have been very popular so far this season. Click here to see our testimonials on our website. We have space for just three more walked up days this season, so if you are interested in having one of the last few, then call Philip on 07802 546175 or click here to email.

At all of our shoots, we organise some exciting walked-up days for a range of quarry including woodcock. Our venues have some ideal ground for woodcock with numerous woods, copses and forests together with plenty of wet areas so loved by woodcock. We have some resident breeding pairs but most of our winter population migrates in from Russia and Scandinavia, typically arriving around the last full moon in November.

Our walked-up options are as follows:
Walked-Up Days for Pheasant, Partridge and Mallard
Available from 1 October to 31 January
For up to six Guns, joined by the Keeper, helpers and dogs. This is a fixed price of £800 + VAT for the team and we would expect the Guns to see 30-70 birds being a mixture of pheasant, partridge and mallard. The fixed price applies regardless of the number of birds shot.

Walked-Up Days for Woodcock, Pheasant, Partridge and Mallard
Available from 1 December to 31 January
Again up to six Guns are joined by the Keeper, helpers and dogs. There is a fixed price of £900 + VAT for these types of days regardless of the number of birds shot. It is anticipated that between 30-70 birds in total of all types will be seen.

Walked-Up Days for Woodcock only
Available from 1 December to 31 January
Walked-up days exclusively for woodcock are generally held in the forestry area of the Great Hockham Shoot as this provides the best location for those days. Again up to six Guns are joined by the Keeper, helpers and dogs. There is a fixed price of £900 + VAT and although we estimate Guns would see around 20-50 birds during the day, due to the number of variables involved, the cost is a fixed amount regardless of the number shot. Stand and Walk Woodcock Days Available from 1 December to 31 January Held at the Great Hockham Shoot only for groups of six Guns. At each drive three Guns stand and three walk, joined by the Keeper, helpers and dogs. After each drive the standing and walking Guns alternate. These are a fixed price of £900 + VAT for the day.

Stand and Walk Woodcock, Pheasant and Partridge Days
Available from 1 December to 31 January As an alternative, we offer stand and walk woodcock, pheasant and partridge days at all of our venues for a fixed price of £900 + VAT per day - these days tend to provide a little more sport due to the wider variety of quarry.

Driven Woodcock Days
Available from 1 December to 31 January
For six standing Guns having the birds driven over them on six drives. The day is run by the Keeper, six beaters and two pickers up. There is a fixed price of £1650 + VAT regardless of the number of birds shot.

Catering Options: Included in the above prices are teas and coffees on arrival along with elevenses in the field and use of the Lunch Hut for Guns to eat their picnic lunches in a warm and dry environment. If required, we can provide a number of great catering options to make your day more enjoyable:
• A hearty full English breakfast on arrival for an additional £5 + VAT per person
• For Guns wanting a full English breakfast plus a traditional hot two course lunch, this can be supplied at a total cost of £12 + VAT per person
• Alternatively, if the Guns prefers just tea or coffee in the morning, a hot two course lunch will be an extra £7 + VAT each.

Please note, all hot meals are subject to a minimum order of at least 6 persons.

Duck Shooting
Well, we got all geared up for Duck Flighting and the weather has been as benign as I can remember. The Met office says that things should get to normal weather wise in a week or so.
