AND WE’RE OFF....

After months of preparation and much eager anticipation, the first shots of the new season have been fired.

Here’s some pictures of teams enjoying some stunning weather and some even better partridge shooting.

COVER CROP UPDATE

As recently as a month ago we were starting to get a little worried about the progress of some of our cover crops due to the dry weather. However the rain over the last couple of weeks has really transformed them and we’re delighted to report the vast majority of the cover crops at all venues are as good as ever and, in some places, better because we’ve added more mustard into the stubble than in previous seasons. As you can see from these pictures, overall the cover crops are in great shape.

AND THE STORY SO FAR......

Robert Brown, Head Keeper, gives us some insight on his Summer at the Game Farm and the start of the Season.

“It’s certainly not been the easiest of years on the Game Farm! We had some hot weather in May, then a couple of weeks of cold weather, especially at nights, followed by six weeks of really hot dry weather. Luckily we had extended our Partridge Pens with some large "A" Frames which gave them extra space to bask in the sun. As you might expect the Game Farm is now virtually empty and we’ll soon to starting on the task of deep cleaning all the pens so we’re ready for next year!”

“We had our first day at the Quidenham & Hargham Estates Shoot on 1st September. There’s some pictures of the day in the Newsletter and others can be seen by clicking here. Although there was wall to wall blue sky with no wind at all, the partridges flew well. Some of the drives were very exciting and we look forward to seeing the birds fly when there’s a bit of wind behind them!”

WILD GEESE ON ECCLES CARR

As well as duck flighting, this season we’ll be shooting wild geese on Eccles Carr. We haven’t shot geese on the Estate for many years but this year we’ve invested in preparing access ways to take you right up to the water’s edge.

As a good duck (and goose!) flight is so dependent on the right weather conditions, we don’t fix our dates for these very far in advance. Instead we constantly review the weather forecasts and if we see the likelihood of a cloudy night with some high wind, we will contact everyone who has joined our Duck Club by email or text and let them know what’s on, when and how much and then on a first come, first served basis, places will be allocated to Guns.

If you would like to join the Duck Club please click here.

GAME TO COOK

We are now supplying a range of venison joints including saddles and haunches plus steaks and venison sausages.

If you would like to receive details of our meat products, please click here.

RED STAGS

We have had a great few weeks stalking with the roe bucks. Lots of deer were seen, some of which were really good quality animals. However, it’s now time for the reds. We are starting to see great herds of reds on the Quidenham Estate already.

If you are interested in a big red or even one of the many muntjac we have on the Estate too, please contact Philip Milburn on 07802 546175 or via philip.milburn@btconnect.com. Dates are offered on a first come, first served basis and we expect demand to be high so early booking might be best!

NEWSLETTER FEEDBACK

Last month we were concerned some of you might not like getting our Newsletters. It seems we were wrong! We again received many positive and supportive comments about them and one Gun kindly wrote saying “Thank you for your Newsletter, a great idea. It is always very welcome at our house, Mary and I enjoy it very much. It keeps us in touch with shooting in the long Summer months. Keep up with the good work!"
